A friend told me about his unusual week over drinks and dinner. It was a pretty unbelievable week. Then a high school classmate he hadn’t seen in 15 years came into the bar. (Well, given the very small nature of our city, that isn’t so unbelievable.)
It was good to visit with my friend, who, despite the very small nature of our city, I rarely see. He restores my confidence in humanity. We had a great meal, which ended with an unconscious man in the next booth being laid out on the floor by his dinner companions while a number of patrons and restaurant staff called 911.
Everything turned out OK, thank goodness, and the restaurant staff really did a good job of keeping things calm and making sure he was all right. I realized that I would offer absolutely no help in a medical emergency. We also marveled at how his companions and the restaurant staff apologized for inconveniencing us.
It was a measure of how great our meal was -- and how we felt we could not profit from the misfortunes of others -- that we left our complimentary dessert untouched.
